Some modems can be flash upgraded; that is, the program inside can be updated using a software utility. Megahertz modems for instance can be upgraded by software available on their homepage at www.mhz.com. You should look up your modem suppliers homepage for information on whether an upgrade is required. Note that this is usually only the case for PCMCIA modems (ie internal).
One user commented recently " I have a USR Sportster XJack 2288. It would only connect to my ISP at 24000 or 26400 and kept dropping the line. I flashed the latest firmware available from www.mhz.com and it now connects at 28800 every time without dropping the line."
Please note that you should be confident that you are using the correct upgrade software. If not you modem may become unusable. You may wish to contact your modem supplier.
If you regularly receive the error message like "unable to negotiate connection" when trying to connect to BigPond on your Windows 3.11 machine try slowing the modem down. To do this click on the Telstra BigPond Cambodia icon in the Microsoft internet Explorer group , then click properties and select the modem tab. In this window there is a selection field where you can set the modem speed. If your modem is a 14.4 modem set the speed to 19,200, if it is a 28.8 set it to 38,400.
Due to "unprecedented" demand we have placed this and all previous newsletters on our homepage. The address is http://www.bigpond.com.kh/newslet.htm.
I have been asked by a number of people whether I can provide a list of all of the email addresses of BigPond members. Some want to use the address to distribute information as widely as possible, others are looking for a way to send mail directly to individuals.
I am asking for feedback from all of our users on whether and how they would wish their emails to be made public. There are a number of options, some of which I will outline briefly here.
Please email me (david.lewis@bigpond.com.kh) with comments and suggestions.
