Fixed Line Phones:

The MPTC lowers international rates by 30% at the end of March

MPTC changes the international access code to 001

MPTC drops the interconnection rate by 50%, from $0.14 to $0.07.  This should eventually drop average telephone rates by the same $0.07 per minute.

Hand Phones

MobiTel starts handphone service in Kratie and Stung Treng linking the Northeast to Cambodia.  MobiTel continues reduced per minute rates with $50 and $20 CellCards until the end of year 2000.

Shinawatra announces in September that they will expand to all provinces for 35,000 users.

The interconnection rate has been dropped from $0.14 to $0.07 a minute.  This should lead to a drop in the In System Rates of up to $0.07 a minute.  However, Average In System Rates remain at $0.17 a minute.

CamTel (018) and Shinawatra (011) eliminate interconnection costs between services.

Prepaid GSM Cards:

Samart wins its court battle to offer prepaid cards and undercuts the high cost of MobiTel CellCards

Samart offers connection for $21 or a free connection with trade in of SIM card from another system.

Shinawatra offers prepaid cards and a $30 registration fee.
