Ground-Breaking Ceremony 

of 

the Project for Rehabilitation of National Road No.7

Kompong Cham (Tonle Bet-Thnal Totung)

 

January 17, 2002 at 8:30 a.m.

at the East Side of the Mekong River on National Road No.7 (Kompong Cham)

 The Ground-Breaking Ceremony of the Project for Rehabilitation of National Road No.7 Kompong Cham Section, hosted by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport will take place on January 17, 2002 at 8:30 a.m. with the high presence Samdech HUN SEN, Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia and Mr. GOTARO OGAWA, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia.

 

The Government of Japan, in accordance with the Exchange of Notes signed on May 17, 2001 between the two Governments, has provided a grant assistance with the amount up to ¥1,975,000,000 approximately equivalent to US$15,250,000 to rehabilitate this section of the National Road No.7 that covers the often flooded east side of the Mekong River to prevent the possible devastation to be caused by annual flooding in this area and to assure the safe traffic. This project is to:

The National Road No.7 has a special significance from the point of view of the development of the Mekong River Sub-region. It is expected that the development in the eastern region of the Mekong River through the rehabilitation of this road will help address the policy objective of the Royal Government of Cambodia for poverty alleviation and rural development. Furthermore, the National Road No.7 that comprises one part of the Asian Highway will contribute to the development of the agriculture-oriented economic structure through improved transportation and communication links from Kompong Cham towards Vietnam and Laos.
