Grant Contract Ceremony
For
the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Projects
(KUSANONE)

The government of Japan has decided to provide, through its Japanese Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Projects scheme called "KUSANONE" (which means Grass-roots in Japanese) a total amount of US$ 414,543 to the following 6 projects. The Grant Contract will be signed between Mr. GOTARO Ogawa, Ambassador of the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia and the Representatives of each recipient organization.

The Grant Contract will be signed between Mr. GOTARO Ogawa, Ambassador of the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia and the Representatives of each recipient organization. "KUSANONE" grant assistance started in Cambodia in 1992, in order to assist Cambodia's reconstruction and development efforts at the Grass-roots level. Up to the present time, including these 6 projects, a total amount of US$ 12,926,527 has been provided by the Government of Japan through the "KUSANONE" scheme to assist 221 international and local NGOs or local authorities' projects, especially in the education and health sectors. In the Japanese Fiscal-year (April 2001~March 2002) a total amount of US$ 2,804,574 has been granted so far under the "KUSANONE" scheme for 38 projects including these 6 projects.

The Project to Construct/Repair School Buildings at Antung Sar Primary School in Kompong Cham Province (US$ 65,340)
Recipient: Association of School Aid in Cambodia (ASAC)
Outline of the Project: This project is to support ASAC to build 4 new buildings, each of which will consist of 3 classrooms, in Antung Sar village, Kang Meas district, Kompong Cham province. Moreover, another building, which was built in 1950, will be repaired to be used as a library. Through this Project, 599 students and 18 teachers from 3 different villages in Kang Meas district will benefit.

The Project to Construct School Buildings at Two Primary Schools in Kirivong District, Takeo Province (US$81,452)
Recipient: Association of School Aid in Cambodia (ASAC)
Outline of the Project: This Project is to support ASAC to construct three 5-classroom school buildings: one building at Kraing Tamung Primary School in Tao commune and another two buildings at Preah Theat Primary School in Prey Ampok commune, Kirivong district, Takeo province. 24 teachers and 1140 students of 3792 villagers will benefit from this project.

The Project to Construct School Buildings in Kompong Thom Province (US$29,578)
Recipient: Provincial Department of Rural Development Community
Development Unit, Kompong Thom Province
Outline of the Project: This Project is to support the Provincial Department of Rural Development Community Development Unit to construct 3 primary school buildings, each of which consists of 3 classrooms, at Kang Meas Primary School in Pnov Commune, Santuk district, Prasat Primary School in Damrei commune, Stoung district and Angdong Thom Priamry School in Chamna Leu commune, Stoung district. In total, 1172 students and 2625 villagers will benefit. The communities at each school contributed 30% of total construction costs.

The Project to Construct a School Building at Chordom Primary School in Kampot Province (US$20,321)
Recipient: Family Health Promotion (FHP)
Outline of the Project: This Project is to support FHP to construct a 5-room school building at Chordom Primary School in Krang Sbov commune, Chhouk district, Kampot province. In total, 1436 villagers and 447 students from grade 1 to grade 5 will benefit from the project. Participating in the school construction, the community contributes 180 m3 for soil compaction and US$510 for labor force.

The Project to Construct Wells and a Sidewalk in Atsu Village in Kompong Thom Province (US$ 38,946)
Recipient: Atsu Development Program (ADP)
Outline of the Project: This Project is to support ADP to construct a 2500-metre sidewalk alongside national road 220 and dig 11 hand-pump wells in Atsu village, Sambo commune, Prasat Sambo district, Kompong Thom province. The national road that cuts through Atsu village is heavy with traffic and causing great danger to the villagers especially students who go to school. The sidewalk will assure the villagers' safety. The hand-pump wells will provide enough water for the villagers. 870 people, of whom 350 are students in and around Atsu village, will benefit from this project.

The Project to Rehabilitate the Irrigation System of Komping Puoy Reservoir in Battambang Province Phase 2 (US$ 178,906)
Recipient: Battambang Provincial Service of Water Resources and Meteorology
Outline of the Project: This Project is to support the Battambang Provincial Service of Water Resources and Meteorology to rehabilitate the existing irrigation, drainage canals, secondary canal No2 and its structures at Komping Puoy Reservoir in Ta Ngen village, Ta Kream commune, Banan district, 32 km west of Battambang provincial town. This project will help increase agricultural production and guarantee local food security by providing supplementary irrigation to 408 hectares in two villages. Through this project, farmers in the villages will have access to biannual cropping with the crop yield expected to increase from 2 to 3.5 tons in the rainy season and to 4 tons on average in the dry season. Thus, the drainage rehabilitation will help improve the standard of living of 243 households in the two villages.
