Distribution Ceremony of
Japanese Emergency Assistance to Fire Victims
in Phnom Penh City

at Anlong Kngan Village, Khan Russey Keo, Phnom Penh

This distribution ceremony is to provide emergency household kits to the victims of the fire in the Tonle Bassac and Chbar Ampov areas who are now at the new relocation site of Anlong Kngan village, Khan Russey Keo. The ceremony will be held in the presence of H.E. Mr. CHEA SOPHARA, Delegate of the Royal Government and Governor of the Municipality of Phnom Penh, High Representative of Samdech HUN SEN, Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia and H.E. Mr. GOTARO OGAWA, Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Cambodia. H.E. Mr. NHIM VANDA, First Vice-President of the National Committee for Disaster Management and H.E. Prof. MY SAMEDI, Secretary General of the Cambodian Red Cross Society will also attend.

In pursuant to H.E. Mr. CHEA SOPHARA's request, the Government of Japan has provided the Project with US$ 44,625 through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Projects "KUSANONE" scheme. This funding is from the grant contract signed on January 29, 2002, to support the Cambodian Red Cross Society provide emergency household kits to the 3,500 fire victim families who are at the new relocation site at Anlong Kngan village. Each family will receive one 70-liter plastic water container, one pair of metal buckets, one mosquito net and one blanket.

"KUSANONE" is Japan's grant aid scheme to support small-scale, grass-root projects by international and local NGOs and local authorities and is an important pillar of Japan's economic cooperation in Cambodia. Since its start in 1992, the total amount of US$ 12,926,527 KUSANONE grant has been provided to assist 221 projects in Cambodia to help Cambodian rehabilitation and development efforts at the grass-roots level. In this Japanese Fiscal-Year 2001 (April 2001-March 2002) a total amount of US$ 2,804,574 has been granted so far under the "KUSANONE" scheme for 38 projects.
