The Signing Ceremony
for the Extension of
The Japan-ASEAN-Cambodia Tripartite Cooperation
for Rural Development Project

In response to the request from the Royal Government of Cambodia, the Governments of Japan,
the Republic of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and the Kingdom of Thailand, have
decided to extend "the Joint Cooperation for the Rural Development Project in Cambodia",
commonly known as "Tripartite Cooperation Project in Cambodia between Japan-ASEAN-Cambodia",
for another year, until March 31, 2003.
The Record of Discussions to this effect will be signed on March 28, 2002 at 04:00 p.m. at
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation between H.E. Mr. LY THUCH,
Minister of Rural Development, H.E. Mr. UCH KIMAN, Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E Mr. GOTARO OGAWA, Ambassador of Japan to
Cambodia and Their Excellencies the Ambassadors of the Republic of Indonesia, Malaysia,
the Philippines and the Kingdom of Thailand.
The "Tripartite" cooperation, which was initiated in July 1992, by Japan, Cambodia, above mentioned four ASEAN countries, UNHCR, and UNDP, is a comprehensive technical cooperation for rural development in Takeo and Kompong Speu provinces, comprised of various activities such as agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, fish farming, public health, education and vocational training aiming to transfer the technical skills necessary for development in the Cambodian rural population.
Since the management of this project is to be transferred to the Ministry of Rural Development in the year 2004, the Mini-Rural Development Project which is implemented by Cambodian staffs with support from ASEAN and Japanese experts has started in the year 2000 and willl continue this year.
Japan has provided all the necessary funds for this "Tripartite" cooperation, which amount to US$ 14,840,000 by the end of March 2002. Beginning from 1994, total numbers of 240 ASEAN experts, 51 JOCVs (Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers) and 24 JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) experts have been dispatched to this project.
