Grant Contract Ceremony
for the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Projects
(KUSANONE)

The Government of Japan has decided to provide, through its Japanese Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Projects scheme called "KUSANONE" (which means Grass-roots in Japanese) a total amount of US$ 671,373 to the following 3 projects. The Grant Contract will be signed between Mr. Katsuhiro SHINOHARA, Charge d' Affairs a.i. of the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia and the Representatives of each recipient organization.

"KUSANONE" grant assistance started in Cambodia in 1992, in order to assist Cambodia's reconstruction and development efforts at the Grass-roots level. Up to the present time, including these 3 projects, a total amount of US$ 14,837,787 has been provided by the Government of Japan through the "KUSANONE" scheme to assist 235 international and local NGOs or local authorities' projects, especially in the education and health sectors. In the Japanese Fiscal-year 2002 (April 2002-March 2003), a total amount of US$1,066,375 has been granted so far under "KUSANONE" scheme for 10 projects including these 3 projects.

1. The Project to Construct School Buildings at Chikhmol Primary School in Takeo Province and Taing Krous Primary School in Kompong Chhnang Province (US$52,720)
Recipient: Khmer Asian Friendship Society (KAFS)
Outline of the Project: This Project is to support Khmer Asian Friendship Society (KAFS) to build two new school buildings, each of which consisted of 5 classrooms with school furniture, a 4-room latrine, and one tube well in Takeo and Kompong Chhnang provinces. 455 children in Chikhmol villages, Kork Preach commune, Kirivong district, Takeo province and 500 children in Taing Krous village, Krang Lvea commune, Samaki Meanchey district, Kompong Chhnang province will benefit from this project.

2. The Project to Support Humanitarian Demining Activities in Preah Vihea Province (US$560,332)
Recipient: Mines Advisory Group (MAG)
Outline of the Project: This Project is to support one year demining operation implemented by six Mine Action Teams of MAG in Rovieng and Koulen districts, Preah Vihea province. The Preah Vihea Province is one of the most mine/UXO affected province and casualty rate is also very high. Approximately 230,000 m2 of land will be cleared for development of this area.

3. The Project to Renovate X-ray Room and Support X-ray Equipment for Battambang Referral Hospital in Battambang Province (US$ 58,321)
Recipient: Battambang Referral Hospital
Outline of the Project: This Project is to renovate X-ray room and to install an X-ray machine in Battambang Referral Hospital in Svay Por district, Battambang province. Currently, 3 Japanese Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) dispatched to the Referral Hospital as technicians and one of them is working in X-ray department for improvement of X-ray service.
