Overview

After decades of civil war, Cambodia has now entered upon a phase of reconstruction. This requires adequate jobs, income opportunities and qualified workforces. Wathnakpheap aims to promote the construction of Cambodia by means of educational projects that primarily target to children and young in rural areas.

Community non-formal education (pre-school, primary school, library & literacy) feeds children to public education and to access skill training. Scholarship project was set up to support girls to continue to secondary education.

Young people who are thoroughly trained in skills not only acquire a personal source of income, but further support to the local economy and economic development of their region. Life skills and small business trainings have been integrated in the skill training curriculums since 2002. Job Counseling has been introduced in late 2004 in the Svay Rieng province curriculum.

In addition, Wathnakpheap helps parents of these children to improve generating income through agro-related training that enables them to improve food security and generate more income. Community saving and loan systems provide families with low interest credit to build small businesses, use their skill knowledge and gain an independent livelihood.

Social welfare and child rights aims to render the village communities enough strength to care for their weaker members, awareness about child rights and primary health care. With this aim in mind individuals are trained in social and health work.

The supportive position of Wathnakpheap is to promote people own comprehensive development that allows strengthening the entire village and improving children and youth's chance of receiving an education.

We also support seeding farms to provide good quality animals and seed to communities. In addition, 'Community Villas' provide opportunities for apprenticeship, employment and villagers to sell handicrafts and agricultural products.

Wathnakpheap strengthens the capacity of community-based self-help organizations to manage their own development activities.

We support the development of groups such as Village Development Committees, Social Welfare Fund Committees, Community Watch Teams and Parent Committees at the community level.

We provide training on mobilising resources, planning, budgeting and managing village based development projects.
