GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES OF CAMBODIA |
The Kingdom of Cambodia is situated in the Southeast Asian region. It has total land area of 181,035 square kilometers, and a population of approximately 11,437,000.
The Kingdom of Cambodia shares its borders with the Lao People's Democratic Republic in the north; the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the east and the south; and the Kingdom of Thailand in the west. The southern part of Cambodia is located near the sea, with coasts and beaches of around 440 kilometers.
The terrain in Cambodia includes the central lowlands, highlands and plateaus. The central lowlands are the agricultural areas where the majority of the Cambodia people are active in farming. On the highlands, there are two mountain-ranges: one of them is Phnom Kravanh ( Cardamom Mountain-range) located in the southwestern part of the country, stretching from Kampot Province to Thailand; and the other is the Dang Rek mountain-range located in the north next to Thailand. Most parts of the plateaus are covered with forests, pastures and fertile red soil suitable for rubber and coffee plants, etc. Cambodia has favorable weather conditions under the influence of monsoon that makes it warm and humid.
Cambodia has several rivers and lakes. The longest and largest river is the Mekong River that flows approximately 500 kilometers long across the country. The Tunle Sab Lake, the largest lake in the country, provides abundant supplies of fishes every year. There are also a number of tourist centers, such as the Angkor Wat Temples and Phnom Kulen in Siem Reap province, beautiful beaches in Sihanoukville, Kep City, Borei Bokor, Kirirom National Park and many other recreation sites.
